Fun on the farm

A mental health day away from schoolwork...Becky, Thomas, and the boys came down and we went to Chesterfield Berry Farm. Carl was on call and ended up working at the hospital all day (gee, what a romantic anniversary!). Anyway, we had fun! We did it all - hay rides, the 8 acre corn maze, the corn cannon, barrel rides, the duck race, Pirates Cove, and more. To top it off we stopped at Sonic on the way home!

A call from the principal

Was it about Chloe? Noooooooooo. Cassie? Yep. My dearest little angel got a bus referral today. The bus driver said she spit on a first grader. Turns out it was a "raspberry", but regardless....gross!

With the first three weeks of school over, Cassie has learned new meanings to the words "dude, awesome, and stupid". And now she has learned how to perform raspberries on the bus. I am such a proud mom.

First day of school!

It's Cassie's first day of school and she's excited!
As you can see from Chloe's expression, she's not thrilled! Get over it, kid! You've got many more years to go!

There never seems to be enough time in the morning. Cassie's socks feel "wierd", Chloe wants a breakfast sandwich instead of cereal or oatmeal. Whatever....first day of school, let's make them happy. I just hope they take the right bus home!

It's not like I don't try

So my grandparents have not seen Cassie since she was 3 months old. I try to get up to PA with the girls, but it's hard. I decided that I had to do it and Labor Day weekend was it! I called mom and she and the girls and I were going to go. We planned on leaving Friday morning --- very early!

Thursday night was Back-to-School night and I had so much to do up there. By the time I got home, finished packing, getting the minivan prepped and ready, and gathering snacks for the road, it was midnight. I planned on getting up at 3:45 to get on the road and pick up mom before 6 am. At one in the morning, Chloe came crying in our room. She woke herself up coughing. We gave her some water and made a bed on the floor next to our bed. She was slightly warm. Back to bed. I could hear her breathing heavily and I couldn't sleep. I watched the clock off and on and finally got up at 3:30. Chloe got up and was coughing more. Carl starting packing the minivan for us and I kept checking on Chloe. I took her temperature and she was at 100.1. Coughing, wheezing. Not good.

I left Carl to finish packing and took her to the ER. I could get a prescription for whatever, and still make it! I told Carl to wait another hour and call mom, and then meet us up at Chippenham. Thank goodness the ER isn't busy at 4 am! They took us right back. We would have been finished faster, but they needed to run a strep test. She has croup, but luckily no strep. Carl meets us up there. I call mom. Yes, we still are coming. We're leaving now.... 5:30 am.

We are able to use the HOV lanes and get up there in record time (although the police tried to pull me over until they saw the car seats and waived me through!). I call mom and she's waiting. Quick potty break for Cassie and we're on our way. We make it onto the beltway. We'll make it, we'll make it. Just 6 more hours to go...

Cassie starts to complain that her stomach hurts. She's cranky. I feel her pain. I'm tired. I figured anyone that got up 4 hours early should be cranky! Perhaps she's hungry? It's almost breakfast time. I have the kids break into the snacks. A breadstick will work for breakfast! And a flavored water. "My tummy hurts, my tummy hurts". Suck it up kid, it's a long ride. Around the beltway, past Tyson's Corner. "I THREW UP!" Pull off the exit. Pull off to the side of the road. Yep, throw up everywhere.

Mom takes one water bottle, I take another. Mom rinses Cassie, I clean the car seat. I hear Chloe coughing, I see Cassie holding her stomach. I look at my mom. I think I will cry. "Let's call home", my mom says. She calls my dad, and Jackie, and leaves another message. I call Carl. "Don't ask", I say. We drive back to my mom's. At least I can take a nap. I crawl into her bed and sleep.

On the way back to Richmond the kids fall fast asleep. I called Sherri and talked to her for an hour on the drive. It's not like I don't try. It's just life gets in the way.

Carl went out later and filled Chloe's prescription. We spent this weekend resting and just hanging around the house. It wasn't all bad. Just not what we planned.
