I'll spare you the long history, but the start of it was from this email from a lecturer on campus:
No water on this special day. In fact, no water since late last night (Wed, 15/09).
I called 473-4209 (the only number where I got a response) at 10 am (Thu, 16/09). The officer in charge said: "We are trying to contact Water Board, but nobody answers because of the national holiday. Somebody should be there on duty, but nobody answers the calls. We will try and keep calling them. Once we have got some information, we will inform Campus residents.
I offer no comments.
This is not funny. This is incredible. Maybe, this is a sabotage...
I trust that our PRO will provide us on Friday with exhaustive information about the case. I would also expect an indirect message from Water Board - via LCCI - to all affected businesses and organisations with apologies, whatever the reason was.
Okay... so we have water issues at Uni (in Taraka, hell, for all of Lae for that matter...) Then there were a series of back and forth emails from the Lae Chamber of Commerce with this particular lecturer. Just a mess. (Ah, the reason Uni wasn't getting updates is because no one renewed our membership??? Yeah, I get all my updates through various other expats that feel sorry me! This is really the only way to get "urgent" news, aka, don't go to Top Town because there's a fight between the Defense Force and Guard Dog.) But in between all of that was the following email from the Water Board (which is the part that made me burst into laughter):
I am very sorry for not informing you that I was in Port Moresby attending a conference as of Sunday 12th September therefore I was unable to respond to you.
I assumed there was power failure and our staffs have not planned well to have the generators up and running with diesel that is why the bore pumps were not pumping water to our valued customers as of Thursday there was no power but the water was supplied from the reservoirs
It is true that we did not supply water midnight Wednesday until midday Thursday we had enough water to supply from our storage tanks but the unexpected power failure and lack of fuel affected our operation. The boys have to purge all air out of the pipe in the morning for the water to flow in the afternoon Thursday.
For your information the tanks can hold water for two days but poor planning has resulted with this situation
I sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and also to all other stakeholders I understand I have provided my mobile phone number in my previous correspondence

I just find it so funny that this is the "reason" ALL the time! You mean we need a back-up plan in case of a power failure? Really? Because we NEVER lose power! (Um, today alone it was three different times for about a 1/2 hour each time...) Shocker! You mean the water board should have generators ready in case of a power failure? With fuel in them and everything? No, you don't say!
